In the 1970s and early 1980s, there was growing public disatisfaction with the police. The police reputation for honesty was shaken by several corruption scandals involving Metropolitan Police Officers and by allegations that police were involved in major crimes. Use of force by the police during the urban disorders and riots of the early 1980s and a miner’s strike have changed the image of public order policing. There also was a growing perception of police’s inability to deal with the problems of a multiracial society. As a result, public consensus about the style of policing began to decline.
