movie review

Rent: The Movie
First and foremost: if you have a chance to see Rent on stage, do not see the movie first. And it is not because the story will be known to you (the story really hasnt changed all that much since La Boheme, on which Rent is based). It is mostly because the movie brings a very different feel and flow to the story. In my opinion, the stage musical is a lot more engaging, where story builds up in one continuous flow, starting at the end of the first act and reaching its peak at the end of the second. Now to the positive things. The soundtrack for the movie is absolutely amazing. All the songs have been re-arranged and re-recorded, bringing a much better sound to them. Even though a few songs have been left out of the movie, I believe the soundtrack still carries all of them. It was produced by Rob Cavallo of Green Days American Idiot fame, and it absolutely shows.Without going into detail and giving away too much, I just want to note Jese L. Martin and Idina Menzel, who probably give the most outstanding performances. Those are the only two that I dont think have been adequately replaced in any other cast that I have seen on stage. The emotion and energy that they bring to their roles stands out from the rest of the cast, who nevertheles do a decent job in their respective parts. It is hard for me to judge how one would react to this movie never having seen Rent before, and I always wanted to hope that the movie will bring the same emotion and energy as the stage production, but I am afraid that in this case it did not happen. While it is a good movie, it is not outstanding, and I do not think it will do much in terms of attracting new people to Jonathan Larsons musical.
